Think asbestos is a thing of the past?
We wish it was. But here’s the hard truth: asbestos is still killing around 5,000 people in Great Britain every single year.
Despite being banned in the UK back in 1999, it hasn’t disappeared. In fact, if your home was built or refurbished before the year 2000, there’s a real chance asbestos could be lurking up in your loft—hidden in things like:
- Old pipe lagging
- Loft insulation (especially vermiculite type)
- Water tanks
- Flue pipes and soil pipes
- Ceiling coatings like Artex
- Roof panels or soffits
And here’s the kicker: asbestos isn’t dangerous unless it’s disturbed. But that’s exactly what happens during loft work—whether that’s installing insulation, boarding the floor, or just poking around for extra storage.

Why Global Asbestos Awareness Week Matters
From 1st to 7th April, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is shining a light on asbestos as part of Global Asbestos Awareness Week. And we’re 100% behind it.
They’ve launched two big campaigns this month:
Asbestos and You – For tradespeople who might encounter asbestos during work
Asbestos – Your Duty – For anyone responsible for managing non-domestic buildings (like schools, offices, or public spaces)
The goal? Simple. Help more people understand where asbestos might be hiding—and stop it before it can do real harm.
So… Could There Be Asbestos in Your Loft?
Short answer? Yes, if your home predates 2000, it’s possible.
And unfortunately, it’s not always obvious. Asbestos can be mixed into cement, sprayed onto beams, or sitting quietly inside an old water tank. It doesn’t look particularly scary. But if you cut it, drill it, or move it around without protection, the tiny fibres can get into your lungs—and they stay there.
Years later, those fibres can cause serious diseases like:
- Mesothelioma
- Asbestosis
- Lung cancer
- Pleural thickening
That’s why we never mess about when it comes to this stuff.
What We Do at The Loft Boys
Before we touch anything in your loft, we’ll ask questions. Lots of them.
• When was your home built or last renovated?
• Have you had any previous asbestos checks done?
• Do you know what kind of insulation is up there?
If there’s even a hint of suspicion, we’ll help you arrange an asbestos refurbishment survey. We don’t cut corners, and we don’t do guesswork—because your family’s health is never worth the risk.
Once we get the all-clear? Then we crack on. But not a second before.
What You Can Do This April
✅ Get informed – Take five minutes to learn where asbestos might be hiding
✅ Check your loft’s history – Especially if you’ve got an older home
✅ Don’t disturb unknown materials – If in doubt, leave it alone
✅ Ask before starting any work – Whether it’s DIY or a professional job, always check
