We at The Loft Boys recommend the LoftZone StoreFloor system for a wide range of lofts, but for lofts in new builds, it’s essential. Why? Well, the short answer is that it’s the only system of its kind that the government has approved for new builds throughout the UK.
The longer answer is the many reasons why it’s received such an endorsement.
What Is It?
The LoftZone StoreFloor is a lightweight but surprisingly strong system for installing a raised loft floor. It allows not only the full height of insulation stipulated in government guidelines but also free airflow that prevents condensation.
Offering a safe environment to store your belongings, it won the Ideal Home Show’s “Best New Product” category, but there’s better. LoftZone is approved by The Carbon Trust as offering substantial savings in your carbon footprint — and that goes hand in hand with saving money on your heating bills.
How Does It Work?
Modern new-build houses usually have roofs constructed with trussed rafters, convenient for the builder but too light to take the weight of traditional flooring. They also can’t be cut or even drilled, without putting their integrity at risk.
At the same time, government guidelines recommend insulation of at least 270mm to prevent heat from escaping through your loft. To make matters more complicated, extra space is needed between insulation and floorboards to allow free airflow. This prevents condensation from forming, which could easily seep through plasterboard and cause dampness in the house.
LoftZone StoreFloor accommodates all this. It’s made of a very strong but lightweight material, with the weight carefully distributed not to put undue pressure on the trussed rafters. At the same time, the floor is raised high enough that there’s plenty of room beneath it both for 270mm of insulation and free airflow.
What Do I Get from It?
Besides a securely floored loft where you can safely store all those things you only need occasionally — Christmas decorations, for instance — the system will also have a dramatic effect on your carbon footprint. If you live in a semi-detached house, for instance, you’ll save at least 580kg of carbon per year, rising to at least 990kg in a detached house.
Since carbon saving involves reducing wastage, this means you’ll also see lower heating bills. That semi, for instance, will see at least £140 cost saved in a year, the detached £240.
Like any system, though, it’s only as good as the people installing it.
